GitHub Copilot in VS Code: Extension, GitHub-Login, Inline-Vorschläge, Chat

The query is GitHub Copilot in VS Code installieren und nutzen. This page follows GitHub docs at docs.github.com/de/copilot for VS Code setup, sign-in, inline suggestions, and Copilot Chat. Copilot requires a legitimate subscription from github.com or your org—no shared accounts. For terminal Copilot, see our Copilot CLI note. To walk a diff on a short call, open a room on wbmeet; see how to create and join a room.

What Copilot does in VS Code

GitHub Copilot offers inline suggestions (gray ghost completions as you type—Tab to accept) and Copilot Chat (sidebar chat with @ workspace, current file, selection, etc.). You typically install GitHub.copilot plus GitHub.copilot-chat; exact bundle names depend on Marketplace and your build. Individuals and teams enable Copilot or Copilot Business/Enterprise through official GitHub billing; quotas and models show in your account.

Install Copilot extensions

  1. 1

    Install from VS Code Marketplace

Open VS Code, Cmd+Shift+X / Ctrl+Shift+X, search GitHub Copilot, confirm publisher GitHub and id GitHub.copilot, then Install. If prompted for GitHub Copilot Chat (GitHub.copilot-chat), install it too for the Chat panel.

  2. 2

    Reload the window

If the Copilot icon is missing, run Developer: Reload Window from the Command Palette or restart VS Code.

  3. 3

    Not Copilot CLI

This page covers VS Code extensions only. Terminal workflows use Copilot CLI—see our CLI install guide.

Sign in with GitHub

  1. 1

    Start sign-in

Click the Copilot icon or run GitHub Copilot: Sign In / Copilot: Sign in from the Command Palette. Choose Sign in with GitHub and authorize in the browser at github.com.

  2. 2

    Verify subscription

Status bar or the Copilot view should show enabled. If denied, check github.com/settings/copilot for personal trial/subscription or ask an admin for Copilot Business seats. Use only your official GitHub account and legitimate payment when required.

  3. 3

    Enterprise and proxies

For GitHub Enterprise Cloud/Server, follow IT docs for VS Code GitHub authentication. On failure, check proxy, default browser, and the VS Code Accounts menu.

Inline suggestions

  1. 1

    Open a code file

In a repo you own, open a supported file. Add a comment such as // parse user id from header and wait for gray ghost text.

  2. 2

    Accept or dismiss

Press Tab to accept; Esc to dismiss. GitHub docs describe cycling alternatives (often Alt+] / Option+]—confirm in docs and your keybindings).

  3. 3

    Toggle and conflicts

Pause completions from the status bar Copilot icon. If another AI extension also shows ghost text, disable one inline provider for hour one.

First Copilot Chat task

  1. 1

    Open Chat

Open Copilot Chat or use Cmd+Shift+I / Ctrl+Shift+I per GitHub docs and your Copilot Chat build.

  2. 2

    Attach current file

Use #file or the Add Context / @ menu for Current File. Hour one, read-only: “In three sentences, explain this file’s main exports and responsibilities.”

  3. 3

    Optional small edit

Second prompt: “Add a unit test for one untested helper; show diff before applying.” Review with git diff; auto-apply behavior varies by version—see release notes.
