The first hour with JetBrains AI Assistant in IntelliJ IDEA or VS Code usually breaks on the wrong plugin, never finishing JetBrains Account sign-in, or never seeing inline completions and AI Chat connect. Install from official docs, authenticate in the browser, then trigger one inline suggestion or ask one project-context question in a repo you own.
La requête est installer et utiliser JetBrains AI Assistant dans IntelliJ IDEA et VS Code. This page follows JetBrains docs at jetbrains.com/help/ai-assistant/installation-guide-ai-assistant.html, activation at jetbrains.com/help/ai-assistant/activation-scenarios.html, inline completion at jetbrains.com/help/ai-assistant/code-completion.html, and VS Code Marketplace item JetBrains.jetbrains-ai-assistant. It is a JetBrains IDE assistant, not this site’s meeting product. For a short huddle to review a diff, open a room on wbmeet; see créer et rejoindre une salle.
Check your editor and license path first
JetBrains AI Assistant is a separate plugin in JetBrains IDEs (not bundled by default) and extension JetBrains.jetbrains-ai-assistant in VS Code. IntelliJ-family IDEs need version 2023.3+; Community Edition needs 2024.1.1+ (PyCharm Unified 2025.1+). After install and activation you can use a JetBrains AI subscription, the automatic 30-day AI Pro trial for new users, AI Pro bundled with All Products Pack / dotUltimate, or during the VS Code public preview a free AI EAP license after JetBrains Account sign-in; you can also connect third-party API keys or integrated agents (Junie, Claude Agent, Codex, GitHub Copilot).
IntelliJ IDEA: install plugin, sign in, inline completion, chat
- 1
Install the AI Assistant plugin
Open IntelliJ IDEA, go to
Settings/Preferences | Plugins | Marketplace, search AI Assistant, click Install, and restart. You can also click Install Plugin in the AI Chat tool window or Let's Go in the JetBrains AI header widget. Confirm you installed JetBrains’ AI Assistant plugin—not a placeholder AI Chat shell without code access. - 2
Activate with JetBrains Account
After install the plugin checks license status: an active JetBrains AI subscription activates automatically; All Products Pack / dotUltimate users get AI Pro; new users receive an automatic 30-day AI Pro trial linked to the JetBrains Account. In the JetBrains AI widget or
Settings | Tools | AI Assistant | Providers & API keys, click Activate JetBrains AI, sign in in the browser, and accept JetBrains AI Terms of Service. Prefer your own models? Pick a third-party provider and enter an API key instead. - 3
Enable and test inline completion
Open
Settings | Editor | General | Code Completion | Inline, ensure Enable inline completion using language models is on, and choose Cloud or Cloud and local. Open your project, type in a source file, wait for gray inline suggestions, thenTabto accept andEscto dismiss. You can also enable completion in Commit Messages or AI Chat input on the same page. - 4
Open AI Chat and attach project context
Use the AI Chat tool window or
View | Tool Windows | AI Chat. Reference files, folders, symbols, or commits with@context—start read-only, e.g. “Where is the entry point of this module?” Switch to agent mode only after connectivity works; the first-hour goal is verification, not production edits.
VS Code: install extension, sign in, completion, chat
- 1
Install from the Marketplace
Open VS Code,
Cmd+Shift+X/Ctrl+Shift+X, search JetBrains AI Assistant, publisher JetBrains, Install. Extension id:JetBrains.jetbrains-ai-assistant(also on Open VSX for Cursor, Windsurf, etc.). Official docs note this is a pre-release extension—install from the in-editor Marketplace; if CLI reports “no release version,” use the UI or a documented .vsix file. - 2
Sign in with JetBrains Account
Open the JetBrains AI Assistant sidebar or sign-in command, choose Sign in with JetBrains Account, complete OAuth in the browser. During preview: existing subscriptions work immediately; without one, sign-in grants a free AI EAP license. Organizations can use AI Enterprise. Never paste account tokens into prompts or commit them to Git.
- 3
Trigger inline completion and AI Chat
Open a local folder workspace, type in source files and
Tabto accept ghost text. Open AI Chat, attach current file or workspace context, ask a read-only question before small edits. VS Code and IntelliJ share the same JetBrains AI backend—useful when teams mix editors.

Installed but no completions
In IntelliJ, check Inline settings enable Cloud models and JetBrains AI is active. In VS Code, confirm sign-in and that you opened a folder workspace—not a single loose file.
Browser login succeeds but IDE stays offline
Check pop-up blockers, proxy settings, and that the same JetBrains Account is used. Log out under Providers & API keys and re-run Activate JetBrains AI.
Want your own model instead of JetBrains AI
Official docs support third-party providers (OpenAI Compatible endpoints, API keys) and integrated agents. Some features may still require JetBrains AI activation alongside BYOK.
Official path: install AI Assistant plugin or VS Code extension → JetBrains Account sign-in/activation → confirm Inline cloud completion → type and Tab → AI Chat with @ context and a read-only question. Plans and preview policy follow jetbrains.com/ai and the help center.
- Plugin does not read code by default
- JetBrains docs state AI Assistant does not access your code until you install, activate, and accept applicable terms. Org admins can disable it by policy.
- Preview policy may change
- The VS Code extension is in public preview; EAP licensing and post-release pricing may shift. Trust what your JetBrains Account page shows.
- This is not a meeting-product guide
- Only JetBrains AI Assistant’s first hour. Short whiteboard call: wbmeet or quand ne pas ouvrir une appli de réunion lourde.
Questions worth checking
Does IntelliJ Community Edition work?
Yes, with IDE 2024.1.1+ (PyCharm Unified needs 2025.1+). Organizational JetBrains AI on Community requires 2024.2.1+. Install the AI Assistant plugin and activate through JetBrains Account the same way.
Must the VS Code extension be paid?
During public preview: existing JetBrains AI subscriptions work; without one, JetBrains Account sign-in grants a free AI EAP license. Full release pricing follows JetBrains AI plans. IntelliJ new users also get a 30-day AI Pro trial.
How are inline completions different from AI Chat?
Inline completions are gray ghost text while typing—Tab accepts, good for line or block continuations. AI Chat handles cross-file questions, explanations, and agent-mode multi-step edits with @ file/symbol context. Test completions first, then ask a read-only chat question.
Must the first task touch production code?
No. Try Tab completions in a small file, ask a read-only chat question, then make one reversible change and review every line of the diff.
