Google’s 2026 AI shake-up: DeepMind leadership, Gemini delays, and the strategy split

Hassabis becomes DeepMind chair and Alphabet chief scientist. Kavukcuoglu takes daily Gemini ops as SVP. The same week, flagship Gemini stays unreleased and four researchers leave for Discovery Loop.

On 5 August 2026, Alphabet told Google DeepMind staff that Demis Hassabis would step back from day-to-day operations, becoming DeepMind’s chair and Alphabet’s chief scientist. Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously CTO and chief AI architect, takes the product front as senior vice president, reporting to Sundar Pichai. The same day, Jeff Dean and three other senior researchers announced they were leaving to found Discovery Loop.

The reshuffle landed while Gemini 3.5 Pro had missed successive public windows, lighter Flash models kept shipping, and OpenAI and Anthropic kept releasing. What follows is a reading of public reporting: who now runs what, why Gemini slipped, and how the internal split between product velocity and long-horizon science is being described. Unconfirmed internal rumor is labeled as such.

Leadership: chair owns direction, SVP owns shipping

In 2023 Google merged DeepMind with Google Brain into Google DeepMind after ChatGPT. Hassabis stayed CEO until this week. TIME, CNBC and others, citing Pichai’s 5 August memo, say he keeps science and long-term questions while handing operations to Kavukcuoglu — as SVP, not CEO.

  1. 1

Hassabis: chair + Alphabet chief scientist

In his staff note he wrote that AGI is “close at hand” and that he needed time to focus on the bigger picture. Reporting says he had already stepped back from many Gemini stand-ups, showing up instead for safety, post-AGI readiness, and governance — including a recent G7. He continues to lead Isomorphic Labs. Shane Legg, cofounder and chief AGI scientist, is still said to report to him.

  2. 2

    Kavukcuoglu: SVP, reports to Pichai

He joined DeepMind in 2012 and worked on DQN and WaveNet before becoming CTO and Google’s chief AI architect. His brief now covers Gemini model development, frontier research, and the Gemini app and developer teams. TIME and Semafor both say he had already been running Gemini discussions for more than a year.

  3. 3

Staff functions pull closer to Google

TIME, citing people familiar with the changes, reported that comms, legal, and marketing will merge with Google, and that some safety and readiness reporting lines may move — though others said nothing is finalized. A Google spokesperson told TIME that frontier-model safety “changes absolutely nothing” and has lived inside Kavukcuoglu’s Gemini team from the start.

The other announcement that day: researchers leaving

01

Four cofounders at Discovery Loop

Jeff Dean (about 27 years at Google, former chief scientist), Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals (DeepMind research VP and a Gemini co-lead), and Quoc Le (Google Brain cofounder) left to start Discovery Loop, a Palo Alto public-benefit company aiming to run experiments in parallel and accelerate discovery in science and engineering.

02

Not a clean break with Google

Pichai said Google will stay on as a founding investor and Cloud partner. Reports name Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures among seed backers, with Alphabet also supplying compute for at least a year. Talent leaving while capital stays is the odd signature of this week.

03

Earlier talent moves

John Jumper, who shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Hassabis, left earlier in 2026 for Anthropic. The New York Times and others also noted Noam Shazeer’s earlier departure for OpenAI. Those moves are not in the 5 August memo, but they are the labor-market backdrop.

Gemini delays: 3.5 Pro stuck, Flash ships first

Gemini 3, in November 2025, was widely read as Google closing the gap. At I/O on 19 May 2026, Pichai previewed Gemini 3.5 Pro; public trackers put the first general window in June. By early August the flagship was still missing from the public API catalog and pricing pages, while lighter Flash models continued to ship. Bloomberg and others tied the slip to coding and related internal bars. Google has also talked about progress on newer models, including Gemini 4 — without a date anyone can check.

Hassabis’s memo said AGI is close, so he needed room to look at the whole board. Kavukcuoglu’s job, in the same note, is to speed frontier shipping. Those are two tracks, not one promotion.

How to read the strategy

Stack the public facts and the change looks like splitting the product race from long-horizon science — not Hassabis leaving Alphabet.

Decisions sit closer to product
Day-to-day Gemini now reports to Pichai. The London lab’s founder moves to chair and science. CNBC notes DeepMind remains rooted in London, while shipping pressure sits on the Mountain View side.
The safety line stays the same in public
Google says frontier safety still lives inside the Gemini team. Outside reporting asks whether readiness functions will fold into Google’s global-affairs stack. Treat that as discussed, not fully confirmed.
Investment as a retention substitute
If Dean’s group will not stay, Google stays as founding investor and cloud partner. That cushions research continuity and shows how much leverage top researchers now have.

What this means for everyday collaboration

Model calendars slip. Standups do not. When the suite gets heavier and the account wall higher, a five-to-fifteen-minute sync still only needs a browser room. That is where wbmeet sits: share a room ID, talk over a board, leave.

Questions worth checking

Did Hassabis leave Google?

No. The public titles are chair of DeepMind and chief scientist of Alphabet, and he continues to lead Isomorphic Labs.

Is Kavukcuoglu the new CEO?

No. Pichai’s memo names him senior vice president. He reports to the CEO and owns daily operations and Gemini.

When does Gemini 3.5 Pro ship?

As of mid-August 2026, Google has not given a new public date that can be checked. Several internally reported targets in the press have already passed.
